Jets Fire QB Before 2023 Season

New York has made its final choice in the quarterback position.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, veteran quarterback Tim Boyle has been released by Gang Green. As Fowler put it, "if not picked up by another team," he will "likely" wind up on the practice squad

In their first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, the Jets started four different quarterbacks.

Chris Streveler, however, was unable to prepare for the competition since he hurt his thumb towards the end of the game. That's why the Jets have opted to abandon ship.

New York was down to three quarterbacks after cutting Aaron Rodgers: Zach Wilson and Kevin Boyle. The big question was always going to be about Boyle, not A-Rod or Wilson.

He was Rodgers' teammate with the Packers from 2018 to 2020, and the two are good friends outside of football. That connection didn't damage his standing, and the new emergency quarterback rule that went into effect this offseason afforded him even more safety.

If both of the starting quarterbacks get hurt during the game, the team can turn to the third quarterback on the 53-man roster. If Boyle was on the bench, you wouldn't have as much leeway. The lack of interest in Boyle on the free market may have played a role in the Jets' final decision to release him.

If they had retained him on the squad, they would have had to wait until Wednesday, August 30 at noon ET to see if players like Gipson and Jason Brownlee were claimed.
